At KNIGHTWATCH K-9, we address the common misunderstanding surrounding harnesses and their proper use in our Puppy to Stop Pulling program. It is essential to recognize that harnesses should be used for specific purposes and not as everyday accessories for dogs. Unless recommended by a vet for health-related reasons, the majority of dogs should not wear harnesses during regular activities. Instead, harnesses serve as valuable tools in specific scenarios such as dog sports or jobs like weight pulling, sledding, tracking, and foundation bite work. Service dogs also utilize harnesses for displaying service-related patches and to assist with mobility when equipped with a specially designed harness. However, it is crucial to differentiate between harness use and proper leash attachment, as using a harness for leash control can be counterproductive to effective training methods. Our program aims to enlighten pet owners about the true purpose of harnesses and their impact on dog behavior, ultimately guiding them toward successful techniques to curb pulling behaviors.
